Hope

This afternoon the smell of the disinfectant was somewhat comforting. The perfectly scrubbed floors and the navy blue doors stretched out in front of me. Each step meant I was closer.

ROOM 33 ICU

I noticed that the door was slightly ajar. I quickly took out the hand sanitiser from my back pocket. As I rubbed it my hands the strong scent washed over my face.

After three long breaths I opened the door. It was brighter today, and I felt peace. But then I saw her. No. She was gone a long time ago.

Her pale face unmoved by my presence, shone brightly under the florescent light. Her smooth skin had grown dry, and the creases around her eyes and on her forehead had become prominent.

The woman I used to know never showed any signs of weakness or inability. The women I used to know would always stay home from work to keep me company on bad days. The woman I used to know would always have dessert before dinner. The woman I used to know would talk to the uber driver about her life story. The woman I used to know gave the biggest hugs that sometimes you would wish it ended quickly. How I wish that hug would never end.

In her place was a corpse that was not ready to give in. She is in there. Somewhere. Fighting to get out, knowing there is no point.

I brought her favorite flower, a chrysanthemum.

Hope.

Hot, wet tears rolled down my cheeks.

What did she do to deserve this? She was kind to everyone. She never failed to make me smile.

Yet now her body cannot take the pain that has been brought to her and soon she will be gone.

Hope.

Everyone I know kept telling me to not lose hope. They kept saying that's what she would have wanted. But I know that having hope won't change anything.

I sat down beside her and watched as my tears stain the delicate sheet that lay over her.

I reached for her bony hand and held it. She was all I had. But now I am all she has to carry on her legacy.

Hope.

~

Now she gone. But mother still stays in my heart.
